GEMMOLOGISTS ASSOCIATION OF SRILANKA(GASL)
The inception of the association was taken place at the Ceylon Tea Propaganda Board Hall on 7th July 1970, as the Gemmologists Association of Ceylon. Prof. C. Kularatnam was elected the Founder President and was started with 13 founder members.
Our vision is “To be the leader in the science of gemmology and industry” with the mission of Provide the leadership to the gemmological science by maintaining the professionalism and high standards in gem & jewellery industry. Being the government accepted only professional association in the field of gemmology, we have conducted an array of activities to meet the objectives of the association. In order to raise funds and to popularise Gemmology, the GASL in 1972 endeavoured to organise an Introductory course in Gemmology further developed in 2009 as Introduction of Diploma in Gemmology Examination in Sri Lanka qualification of international standards here in Sri Lanka for an affordable fee; International Coloured Gemstones Conference and the Gem & Jewellery Exhibition in 1982; 19th International Gemmological Conference (1983) were few land marks.
Among many activities of the Association to educate the general public about the Gem wealth of Sri Lanka, in Diamond Grading and Geuda heating techniques, organising several field trips and lectures by Sri Lankans and eminent foreign gemmologists, the gems and mineral show conducted once in every two years was initiated in the year 2001. In 2008 this Mineral Show of Sri Lanka was renamed as “Jewels” 2008, with annual Gem and jewellery trade exhibition and competition of Sri Lanka” with the sponsorship of National Gem and Jewellery Authority.
