Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka (GASL) is the professional body of Gemmologists in Sri Lanka. It was established in 1970 and since then it works with broad spectrum of activities related to science of Gemmology.
With the aim of providing a recognized professional qualification in gemmology at an affordable cost for those interested in gemmology, Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka (GASL) annually conducts it's Diploma examinations in gemmology since year 2009. The question papers and answer scripts of the Diploma examination in Gemmology are moderated by internationally recognized local and foreign examiners.
Candidates who pass the examination will be awarded a Diploma by the Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka. On receiving the Diploma, candidates can use the qualification DGem (SL) after their names. Also they can apply for the membership of the Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka, MGA (SL).

Structure of Diploma in Gemmology examination |
There are two parts in the examination.
a) Theory examination- two papers
b) Practical examination
To award Diploma, a candidate should pass Theory examination and the Practical examination.
According to the level of competency shown by the candidates at the examination, following grades for the Diploma will be assigned,
- Diploma with Distinction (average 75% or above in all three papers)
- Diploma with Credit (average 60% to 74% in all three papers)
- Diploma (average 50% to 59% in all three papers)

| Entrance qualifications for DGem (SL) examination |
Candidates should have following qualifications to register for the examination
1. Certificate in Gemmology by University of Moratuwa.
2. Certificate in Gemmology from affiliated institutes of the GASL.
3. Any other qualifications in gemmology awarded by any other Institute,
acceptable to the exco of the GASL |

| General conditions for candidates of examination |
1. The candidate should be over 18 years at the commencing date of examination. No upper age limit is applicable.
2. The examination is conducted in November each year and the medium of examination is English. It is open for both Sri Lankans and non-residents of Sri Lanka.
3. The GASL do not conduct any classes in this regard. The registered students can attend the revision seminars conduct by the GASL. Also they can attend the classes conduct by affiliated teaching centers of GASL
4. There is no limitation for the number of attempts in the examination, but have to pay examination fee for each attempt.
5. Fees once paid is non refundable.
6. The executive committee of the Gemmologist Association of Sri Lanka will reserve the sole right to decide the place & date of examinations, release of results and other matters related to above said examination. Candidates cannot question these.
