With the aim of providing a recognized professional qualification in gemmology at an affordable cost for those interested in gemmology, Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka (GASL) annually conducts it's Diploma examinations in gemmology since year 2009. It is open for both Sri Lankans and non-residents of Sri Lanka who are over 18 years of age at the commencing date of examination. As the entrance qualification candidates should have a certificate in gemmology from an institution recognized by the GASL. Twelve Diploma holders are produced by GASL in two batches, as five in 2009 & as seven in 2010, up to now and the third batch will sit for their examinations in November 2011.

The students registered with GASL for Gemmology Diploma can attend the classes conducted by affiliated teaching centers of GASL. The examination is conducted in November each year and the medium of examination is English. The examination consists of two theory papers and one practical paper. Question papers and answer scripts of the Diploma examination are moderated by internationally recognized local and foreign examiners.

Candidates who pass the examination will be awarded a Diploma by the Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka. According to the level of competency shown by the candidates at the Diploma examination, distinction, credit & pass grades will be assigned to them. Three awards are available for candidates who performed well at the examination. At 2010 examination following students received those awards

On receiving the Diploma, candidates can use the qualification DGem (SL) after their names. Also they could apply for the membership of the Gemmologists Association of Sri Lanka, MGA (SL).
