This is a question very often, a layman will ask you. Let us look at what we call gems. Any substance which has some special properties is called a gem. The ancients believed what we in our present day believe too and it is not unhealthy to support that they took many of these ideas as ‘old wives tales’. many of these old wives are dead and you keep harking back to the old wives tales. Certainly there has been many technical advances in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The most vexing problem ever faced by the coloured gem stone tradeis without doubt the beryllium diffusion of corundum. The problems that came with the advent of synthetic gems around the turn of the nineteenth century was soon overcome with comparative ease with the equipment available even then in a modestly equipped laboratory. Even the more advanced synthetics that hit the market like the Kashans, Chathams, Inamoris, Knishkas, Lechleitners,Czochralski etc. could be easily identified by a diligent gemmlogist with a good microscope.
